DocuSeal vs Documenso: Licensing, Pricing, Embedding

Both projects are licensed AGPL-3.0. If you are putting signing inside a commercial product, that single fact matters more than any feature difference between them, and it applies to both equally. Settle it before comparing anything else.

What actually separates them is the stack you would be adopting and what embedding costs once you outgrow the free tier.

Credit where due: both are genuinely good open-source projects, actively maintained, with real communities behind them. We are a commercial vendor in the same category, so treat our framing with the skepticism it deserves. Every figure below is linked to the source we read it from, dated, and worth re-checking with the vendor before you act on it.

What is the same about them?

More than the comparison posts suggest.

Both are AGPL-3.0. Both can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure. Both build signing around fillable PDF forms, expose a REST API with webhooks, and sell a hosted plan alongside the open-source project. Both have a commercial license available for organizations that need one.

So the honest version of this comparison is not a feature grid. It is three questions: what does the license oblige you to do, which stack do you want to own, and what does embedding cost.

What does AGPL-3.0 mean if you embed this in a commercial product?

This is the question to resolve first, and it is a question for your counsel rather than for any vendor's comparison table, including ours.

AGPL-3.0 is a strong copyleft license. Its distinguishing feature is section 13, which extends the source-provision obligation to users who interact with the software over a network, not only to those who receive a copy. Ordinary GPL obligations attach on distribution; the AGPL's attach on network use as well. That provision exists precisely because SaaS was being used to route around copyleft.

What that means for a specific product depends on facts a license summary cannot settle: whether your integration creates a combined or derivative work, how it is deployed, and what your users interact with. Two teams embedding the same project can land in different places. Get an answer from a lawyer before you build on either, not after.

The practical signal worth noticing: both projects sell commercial and enterprise licenses, and both position them partly around licensing and compliance needs. Vendors do not build that product line unless customers keep arriving with this exact question.

Which stack are you adopting?

If you self-host an open-source project, you inherit its stack, and eventually someone on your team will read its source.

Neither number is a quality measure, and star counts are the weakest signal in open source. They are worth listing only because they are the one directly comparable figure both projects publish, and because the gap is small enough to tell you these are peers rather than a leader and a follower.

The language is the decision that actually persists. A TypeScript codebase is more likely to match a product team already writing TypeScript, which matters when you need to patch behaviour rather than file an issue and wait. A Ruby codebase is a different hiring and on-call proposition. Pick the one your team can read at 2am.

What does embedding cost once you need it?

Both put embedding behind a paid tier, and they price it on different axes. Figures read from each vendor's own pricing page on 2026-08-22, and both should be re-checked before you budget against them.

DocuSeal (pricing): the free Cloud tier allows 10 signature request emails a month with 10 field types. Pro is $20 per user per month (or $200 a year) and is what unlocks API and embedding, your own logo, your own sending address, SSO and SAML, roles and teams, and SMS identity verification (20 included, then $0.20 per message). API and embedding then bill $0.20 per document signed in production, with an unlimited free sandbox.

Documenso (pricing): the free tier allows 5 documents a month. Individual is $25 a month with API access for personal use. Teams is $40 a month including 5 users, additional users at $8 a month, and it is the tier that includes embedded signing. Platform is $250 a month ($3,000 a year) for unlimited documents and users, unlimited API access, and white-labeled embedded signing.

The structural difference matters more than the numbers. DocuSeal charges per user and per signed document, so its cost tracks both your headcount and your volume. Documenso's Platform tier is a flat monthly fee with unlimited users and documents, so its cost is predictable and stops scaling once you reach it. Which is cheaper depends entirely on your shape: a small team signing a great deal favors Documenso's flat tier, and a large team signing rarely favors DocuSeal's per-document billing. API-first eSignature covers the questions worth asking any vendor once cost stops being the deciding factor.

Which should you choose?

Choose DocuSeal if your team is comfortable in Ruby, your volume is low enough that $0.20 a document stays small, and you want the larger community and the more mature form builder. Its free tier is also the more useful of the two for evaluating quickly, since 10 requests a month goes further than 5 documents. Choose Documenso if you write TypeScript, you want embedded signing without per-user fees stacking up, or you can see yourself needing white-label embedding, which arrives on its Platform tier at a predictable flat cost rather than as a per-seat multiplier.

Choose either over a commercial platform if self-hosting is a hard requirement, whether from a data-residency rule, an air-gapped environment, or a procurement position you do not control. That is a real requirement and open source is the honest answer to it.

When is neither the answer?

Two cases, and we are one of them, so read this section with that in mind.

When the AGPL answer comes back wrong. If your counsel concludes the license obliges more than your business can accept, the choice is a commercial license from one of these two projects or a commercially licensed platform. That is a licensing decision, not a technical one, and no amount of engineering preference changes it.

When signing needs to disappear into your product across many customers' brands. Self-hosting and multi-tenant white-labeling pull in different directions: the first means you run infrastructure, the second means every one of your customers needs their own brand on the signing page, the notification emails, and the certificate.

For that second case, Verdocs is a commercial platform rather than an open-source project, and the trade is explicit. Our client SDKs are MIT licensed (npm), so the code you embed carries no copyleft obligation, and there are 75+ web components that render in your own DOM. Pricing is envelope-based, from $1,500 a year and scaling to $0.20 an envelope on enterprise agreements, with no per-seat fees. What we do not offer is self-hosting. If running it yourself is the requirement, we are not the answer and DocuSeal or Documenso is the better place to spend your evaluation time.
